October 2024 – Headley Hall Demonstrator Hub Update

Headley Hall Site Plan

Headley Hall Site Plan

Progress at the Headley Hall Demonstrator Hub has been steady, with crops showing expected seasonal changes. SRF and SRC species like poplar and willow are advancing through senescence, while Miscanthus varieties, particularly Athena, exhibit strong growth. Weed management has been a priority, with glyphosate applications and some targeted treatments. Maintenance activities, including grass flailing and fence inspections, ensure the site remains well-managed and prepared for winter operations.

Crop Diaries

Click on the titles below to find out how each of the crops are progressing.

Alder

  • The  SRF alder trees still have green leaves or what is left of them after being quite heavily damaged by insects.
  • New Buds are forming on the branches though which is a pleasing sign.

Black Locust

  • Senescence has started on the SRF black locust ‘Turbo’ plants.
  • Some have lost their leaves entirely and others have leaves turning yellow.
  • The plot is fairly weed free around the plants as the canopy was a good weed suppressant throughout the year.

Eucalyptus

  • The  SRF Eucalyptus trees have been staked with bigger posts for the winter.
  • The majority of the trees are looking healthy with green leaves.
  • One or two have leaves that are turning a bit red to yellow colour, will keep an eye on this.
  • The area through the trees has been cut back before the winter.

Poplar

  • In the SRF poplar plot the trees are looking healthy, all starting area to senesce off for the winter, some new buds are forming on the taller branches of the trees.
  • The majority the SRC poplar trees are starting to senesce, with the lower leaves turning yellow and the ones higher up are not as green as they once were. .

Miscanthus

  • The 0.5 ha Miscanthus giganteus plants are starting to senesce off.  We are unsure as to what to do for the Miscanthus harvest, as there is no one nearby that has the crop. We are looking for a farmer or contractor to cut and bale.
  • The 0.5 ha Miscanthus Athena™ is growing well and still very green.
  • The 2023 Miscanthus Variety Trial plots have a few flowering plants and a lot of them are starting to yellow off. The plots that have established are looking very full.
  • The 2024 Miscanthus Variety Trial plot is pretty clear of weeds. T cover crop in the plots is mainly just clover but is present and growing well.

Willow

  • There has been an extensive leaf drop in the 0.5 ha SRC willow plot. The Endurance variety is the exception with majority of trees still with green leaves, but the tips are starting to turn.
  • In the SRC willow variety trial plots most of willow plants are starting to senesce with the crop canopy looking very yellow. No issues with grazing has been seen in these plots.

Sida

  • The sida plot has been hand rouged to remove the OSR volunteers that had popped up throughout he area.
  • We will get in and take out the grass weed that has grown across the area soon when there is less pressures with other areas of work.

Reed Canary Grass

  • The reed canary grass is growing well and is now a fairly substantial crop.

Switchgrass

  • The switchgrass is growing well and is now a fairly substantial crop.

Plans and Actions

  • The fence line has been sprayed at 4l/ha of round up before spending a day when the SFI mix starts to die to remove weeds that has grown up through this.
