May 2024 – Cockle Park Farm Demonstrator Hub Update

Summer is arriving at Cockle Park Farm and most of the crops are growing well. The weather has been mainly cloudy with some sunshine and some rain. We’ve had moderate temperatures and moderate rainfall.

Crop Diaries

Alder

  • The SRF Alder plants are looking very healthy.
  • There is no pest or insect damage.

Black Locust

  • The SRF black locust ‘Turbo’ area was gapped up on the 10/04/2024 and cut down to 10 cm after planting. The area was sprayed on the 19/04/2024 with 4 l/ha Glyphosate. Hare damage has been observed but no insect damage has been observed. The Black locust ‘Turbo’ is starting to grow now with leaves starting to appear. No pest or insect damage has been observed.
  • The SRF black locust ‘Turbo Obelisk‘ area was sprayed on the 8/04/2024 with 4 l/ha Glyphosate. The Turbo Obelisk was re-planted on the 10/04/2024. No pest or insect damage has been seen, but there is no sign of growth yet.

Eucalyptus

  • The SRF Eucalyptus plants are growing well.
  • Wooden stakes were installed on 16/05/2024.

  • There is no pest or insect damage.

  • 25 plants are dead.

  • Eucalyptus trees for gapping up have been received and planted.

Poplar

  • The SRF poplar plants are growing well. There has been some caterpillar damage. The re-planted trees have new shoots starting to appear.
  • The SRC poplar plants are growing well. There is no pest or insect damage. New shoots starting to appear on the replanted trees.

Miscanthus

  • The 0.5 ha Miscanthus giganteus plants are starting to grow. Glyphosate was applied on 07/05/2024 with the Herbidome as new shoots were appearing. There is no pest or insect damage.
  • The Miscanthus Athena™ was replanted on 20/05/2024.

Willow

  • Some hare and deer damage has been seen in the 0.5 ha SRC willow plot.
  • No insect damage has been observed.
  • All plants have green leaves.
  • Some plants have yellow leaves.

Sida

  • The Sida is booked for planting on Wednesday 29th May 2024

Reed Canary Grass

  • The reed canary grass was drilled 08/05/2024

Switchgrass

  • The switchgrass was drilled on 08/05/2024

Silphium

  • The Silphium was drilled on 09/05/2024
