The need to decarbonise the energy system is well understood, and in the UK, along with many countries renewable electricity systems are being installed at pace. However, an area that gets less attention is how we can produce chemicals in the future, that are the same or equivalent to those currently produced from fossil fuels. Overall, we are going to need to move to a bio-economy – one in which the ‘stuff’ that we use is all made from biological material as opposed to oil. A new report from the Supergen Bioenergy Hub and the Biomass Biorefinery Network outlines how the biomass sector is going to be key to the future production of the chemicals that underpin every day life.
