Biomass Connect and Envirocrops of DESNZ’s Biomass Feedstock Innovation programme were promoted at the Energy and Farm Diversification Show 2023 at Gurteen College, Tipperary on 20th July 2023.
The event was opened by Charlie McConalogue TD, Ireland’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and received over 4,000 visors from all over to view the stands and listen to over 100 speakers on topics around energy, farm diversification and smart climate land use.
Chris Johnston, of Northern Ireland’s Agri-food and Biosciences Institute, spoke on biomass production and utilisation incorporating UK Govt’s (DESNZ) efforts in preparing the sector for upscale. He highlighting the Biomass Connect demonstration platforms and Envirocrops knowledge dissemination tool as projects within the “Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme”.
At a further Panel discussion event, Chris Johnston and Prof JJ Leahy of Limerick University discussed the potential emergence and benefits of alternative and climate smart land use, incorporating biomass crops for environmental protection and production of carbon resources other than energy; specifically a project illustrating the extraction and utilisation of bioactive compounds and pulp products from the focussed targeting of certain willow varieties: Interreg NEW-BIOWILL Project.
