Demonstrator Hub Update – NIAB, Headley Hall – May 2024

Most crops are now growing well at the Headley Hall Demonstrator Hub. As the weather improves and the days lengthen growth rates increase in both the crops and the weeds and grass. We've been keeping on top of these. The Sida plot was also planted at the beginning of May.

As the weather improves and the days lengthen growth is speeding up. This includes the weeds and grass, so management of these has been the main emphasis this month. The 2024 Miscanthus variety trail and the Sida plots have been planted up this month too.

The month of April has been a busy one at the Biomass Connect Demonstrator hubs. Overall, the schedule is on track. Wet weather has still been a major issue for using heavy machinery on already very sodden ground at the majority of sites. Some sites have however been able to get on the land which is a positive. Spring growth is now good across the country and we are looking forward to a productive summer season.

Gapping up and replanting have been the main activities at the SRUC Boghall Demonstrator Hub in Scotland this April. The plots are beginning to show some good signs of growth, but the weeds are growing in some too.

The BGI Demonstrator Hub in Chesham has been busy in April as Spring growth takes hold. Gapping up and preparing for the summer have been the main tasks.

The Headley Hall site is looking good. Gapping up to fill initial losses has been completed on most plots and Spring growth continues apace throughout. Weed control has been an ongoing process but well worth it as we now look forward to a productive summer season.

Things are finally drying out at North Wyke and the ground is almost ready to be driven on by tractors. As the crops begin to put on some summer growth we've been busy gapping up and sowing seeds plus taking visitors on tours of the plots.
