September 2024 – Hillsborough Demonstrator Hub Update
At the Hillsborough Demonstrator Hub, crops are progressing through seasonal transitions. SRF species like alder and black locust are well into senescence, with Eucalyptus growth steady and above guards after replanting. Miscanthus giganteus and Athena both demonstrate strong growth, with Athena showing slightly more lodging. SRC willow has largely senesced, displaying visible allelopathy effects reducing weed growth beneath the canopy, while clover thrives at plot edges. Maintenance activities included autumn phenotyping, mowing, and targeted herbicide applications to manage weeds in select plots. Some species like Sida and Reed Canary Grass show slower growth, with Switchgrass plots requiring further evaluation.
Crop Diaries
Click on the titles below to find out how each of the crops are progressing.
Alder
- The SRF alder is progressing through senescence. The leaves are mainly all brown and about 50% have dropped. Some green ones are still hanging on.
- Due to less leaves on the plant damage from the sawfly is not visible.
- Rust appears to not be as bad this year as it was last.
- The grass was mown at the beginning of October.
Black Locust
- The SRF black locust ‘Turbo’ have progressed through senescence, very few leaves are left on the plants.
- Grass was mown at the beginning of October.
Eucalyptus
- Growth in the SRF Eucalyptus plot seems okay for this season. All apart from the replanted trees are well above the guards now.
Longer canes with ties were put in on 16th October.
Grass was mown at the beginning of October.
Poplar
- Both the SRF poplar and SRC poplar are beginning to senesce. Some varieties are more progressed than others.
- There is very little rust or damage visible. A bit of wind damage to the leaves.
- The grass was mown at the beginning of October.
Miscanthus
- The Miscanthus giganteus is still looking quite green with a rough average of about 20% senescence observed in the plants. It’s a very good stand at mostly above 2m with straight stems and with little to no lodging. Autumn phenotyping was carried out on the 29th of October.
- The Miscanthus Athena™is still looking quite green with a rough average of about 10% senescence observed in the plants. Lower than the MxG. Stem height was roughly the same. However, phenotyping in this plot was much harder due to quite a large amount of lodging. Autumn phenotyping was carried out on the 29th of October.
- Autumn phenotyping of the 2023 Miscanthus variety trial was carried out on the 29th of October.
- Autumn phenotyping of the 2024 Miscanthus variety trial was carried out on the 29th of October. The plots were sprayed with MCPA and Envy to burn off chickweed, which was creeping into the plots last to be planted. They were checked for leguminous cover crop emergence and it would appear there has been none.
Willow
- The SRC willow appears to have senesced well. The Endurance variety is still holding on to leaves, however, most varieties have shed most leaves or all. The allelopathy is very visible where nutrient competition and canopy cover has killed off the weeds and grass underneath. In some areas, mostly around the edges, large amounts of clover has moved in as ground cover.
- The willow variety trial is the same as with the commercial plot. Most varieties have senesced or have begun the process of senescence. The gras was mown in early October.
Sida
- The sida plot has been weeded all the way through the plot.
- There is still very little growth since planting.
Reed Canary Grass
- The reed canary grass is growing but there is a high weed presence.
Switchgrass
- The switchgrass maybe growing but we are unsure if it is just weed grass or switch grass.
